Alex Yoong in GP2 Asia
Meritus sign former F1 driver

My Team Qi-Meritus.Mahara has confirmed that experienced Malaysian driver Alex Yoong will be part of its strong driver line-up for the second GP2 Asia season.

Alex Yoong has tested with the team on Wednesday and Thursday, 8th and 9th October during the GP2 Asia official tests at the Chinese GP circuit.

Alex Yoong commented, “I am delighted to be part of an all-Asian-and-Middle-Eastern team, My Team Qi-Meritus.Mahara. It feels like being at home, in a Malaysian team even if I had never been associated with the team before during my career. I’m determined to help the team finish its second GP2 Asia season in the lead and as a winner. Everything is in place to allow me to do so. I am really looking forward to a season with the team and can't wait for the first race now that I had a feel of the car from the official test session at Shanghai!”

Yoong added, “There is a lot of work to do to be completely comfortable in the car. I had a good initial impression through the working program that we ran with Gianfranco Bielli our team principal and things are working very well so far with the engineers and mechanics. I hope to bring the team the benefit of my experience having taken pole, fastest lap and winning at Shanghai for the Malaysian A1 Grand Prix team in 2005/06. I'm really happy to be teaming up with Earl Bamber and we'll be going all out to obtain a victory in the opening round of the new season.”

Gianfranco Bielli team Principal commented, “A good first day of work. The times are not decisive as we used old sets of tyres. This session was really more of a shakedown for the mechanics, the driver and the car so that we all get to know each other and become confident so that the operation gets naturally oiled.”

Peter Thompson team founder commented, “Our driver line up is strong. We need a good combination. Alex is the most experienced, proven, and reliable driver in Malaysia I hope that his experience and will to win will clearly show our Asian and Middle Eastern teams true potential. We’re looking forward to an exciting second season in GP2 Asia and to fighting at the front.”

The first round of the season will take place at Shanghai on 18-19 October, as a support race to the F1 Grand Prix weekend. The season will take in six, two-race rounds ending in Bahrain on 19 April 2009.
