Alonso takes second session
McLaren down the order

Second practice for the Brazilian grand prix at Interlagos again featured select light showers, and this time it was Fernando Alonso, a late season star for Renault, who took the spoils.

The Spaniard set a best of 1:12.296 to come home just one twentieth of a second ahead of Felipe Massa in the Ferrari.

The home challenger, Massa, led Jarno Trulli in the Toyota, the Italian recovering well from a high fever to shade Massa by just under one tenth, while Kimi Raikkonen set fourth best time to give Ferrari further cause for hope.

Mark Webber again ran well – to fifth – in the Red Bull, and was followed by the revelation of the season, Sebastian Vettel, in the Ferrari powered version of the same car, the Toro Rosso.

The remainder of the top ten saw Nelson Piquet confirm Renaults form in seventh, Nico Rosberg improve from this morning to eighth in the Williams, with his team mate Kazuki Nakajima a fine tenth, and between the two came Lewis Hamilton, the championship hopeful taking things easy but appearing to find a good balance difficult to come by.

Mclaren reverted to the old rear wing – having brought a new one for this race – on both cars this session, in which Heikki Kovalainen only recorded fifteenth, and will likely run the newer version tomorrow.

BMW had a quiet session with Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld in 12th and 13th, and Honda fell back to 16th and 18th, their usual positions this season.
