Robert Doornbos is close to signing a contract with Newman/Haas/Lanigan (NHL). The Dutchman's management confirmed to UpdateF1 that the deal is as good as done and will be announced in the near future.
Manager Lodewijk Varossieau: "Everything is looking good. Robert will soon announce his plans." Earlier, Doornbos announced he would drive for a top-team that won multiple races in 2008. NHL is the only multiple race winner with an empty seat. Earlier this week, Varossieau told autosportnieuws.be the deal is "99% done."
This would mean NHL Racing would continue as a two-car operation, after it announced having difficulties finding the required sponsorship to field a second car, leaving race winner Justin Wilson out of a ride for 2009 so far. It looks as though Doorbos did find a sufficient financial package through his sponsors ING and Red Bull to return to AOWR.
27-year-old Doornbos, former F1-driver and Champ Car Rookie of the Year 2007, was unable to secure a ride the newly-merged IndyCar Series last year and took part in the new Superleague Formula championship. After a succesful season with two wins and a third place in the championship, he would now return to the States to make his IRL debut and partner Graham Rahal.
