Mark Webber returned to the cockpit this morning, on schedule as planned following the broken leg suffered in a cycling accident some weeks ago. Webber had been confident of a quick return, and has lost little time as the Red Bull RB5 is running for only the third day.
The Australian is at Jerez, in Spain, where Red Bull are testing alongside sister team STR – who are still running a 2008 car for Sebastien Buemi – plus Williams, McLaren-Mercedes and Renault. Ferrari, BMW and Toyota are testing in Bahrain.
By the middle of the day on Wednesday Webber had continued to show the initial promise of the Renault-powered RB5, his best time of 1:22.106 after 22 laps putting him third fastest – second of the 2009 cars – behind the McLaren MP4-24 of Heikki Kovalainen who had lapped in 1:21.284. Fastest time of the day goes, unsurprisingly, to Buemi, who has so far managed a best of 1:18.703.
Renault continue to struggle with the troubled R29, as Nelson Piquet has so far managed only six laps with a best time of 1:24.840.
