Normal service resumed at Jerez today, the third day of the final test, when Jenson Button set fastest time of the day in the amazing Brawn BGP001. His best time of 1:17.844 represents easily the best time of the winter, and the Englishman also managed to run longer stints on his way to a total of 95 laps during the day.
Second place went to Nico Rosberg in the Williams FW31. The team have had a patchy testing season, but appear to be right on the pace on longer runs today, and Rosberg set a fastest time of 1:18.071 – faster than all bar the Brawn at this circuit – indicating that all is looking fine with the Toyota-powered car.
Third fastest was Nelson Piquet, the young Brazilian also running some longer runs in the Renault R29 on the way to a best of 1:18.382, and in the customary – as it has become – final position was Lewis Hamilton in the troubled McLaren MP4-24. Progress has been made, however, for the best time by the silver car was just over 1.2 seconds off the fastest of the day, somewhat closer that the two seconds and more they were lagging by last week.
Testing continues at Jerez tomorrow where Brawn, Renault and Williams will be running their final days, while McLaren will run solo on Thursday, the last chance to make upgrades before the teams ship for Melbourne.
