The McLaren MP4-24 appeared with an amended diffuser in the opening practice sessions in Shanghai, although the change is a long way from being an interpretation of the ‘double decker’ design recently passed as legal by the ICA.
The amendment is the adding of an extra flap or winglet beneath the crash structure, and entirely within the previously disputed blind spot apparently left unregulated.
The addition appeared to work in opening practice when the cars were first and fourth fastest, but the second session appeared to be business as usual as fastest McLaren was Heikki Kovalainen in ninth place, a full second from the pace.
The change is expected to be the first step in a move towards a full redesign of the rear end, and it is also rumoured that Renault may try a new interpretation this weekend.
