WSR: Round 1 Barcelona
Marcos Martinez takes double

The 2009 World Series by Renault series started this weekend in Barcelona, with controversy. Pre-season championship favourite Miguel Molina was given a penalty after qualifying on pole because his Ultimate team gave him a set of his teammate Greg Mansell’s tyres.

This promoted by personal title favorite – former GP2 racer Adrian Valles of Epsilon Euskadi on to pole position. But come the race Valles was not able to stay at the front as he made a bad start and Marcos Martinez moved into a lead that the Pons driver would never lose.

Bertrand Baguette was second for Draco, ahead of Valles, Carlin teammates were fourth and fifth with Turvey finishing ahead of Alguersuari in a reverse of how the finished in the British Formula Three Championship last year. James Walker was sixth for P1 with GP2 Asia racer Chris van der Drift seventh for Epsilon Euskadi, sometime A1GP and GP2 driver Fairuz Fauzy was eighth for Fortec ahead of Molina who recovered to ninth and Adrian Zaugg was tenth for Interwetten in his first race since dropping down from GP2.

Martinez proved it was no fluke when he won race two on Sunday in wet conditions.

Sten Pentus came home second just under two seconds behind in a Fortec. van der Drift was third with teammate Valles fourth. Zaugg fifth and former Star of Tomorrow and another pre season favorite Charles Pic was sixth for Tech 1, Fauzy was seventh, Pasquale di Sabatino eighth for RC.

Brendon Hartley who was third finished ninth for Tech 1, is only signed up for the first three races as the reminder of the season will clash with his Euro series Formula Three commitments with Carlin. Following Hartley and completing the top ten was Mansell.

After his double Martinez has twenty-seven championship points, and leads the championship from Valles who was sixteen with Van Der Drift just behind with fourteen.
