Bahrain dawned warm and dry as the dusty Sakhir circuit hosted first practice for this weekend fourth round of the championship, and it was Lewis Hamilton – the McLaren wearing a further enhancement to the rear diffuser – who dominated the session.
The World Champion lapped in 1:33.647 and was comfortably quicker than the nest best, the two BMW Sauber drivers Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica who used the super soft rubber to come in just over quarter of a second behind.
Nico Rosberg continued Williams’ fine practice form to head Jenson Button in the first of the Brawns, the second – driven by Rubens Barrichello – lining up seventh behind the second McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen.
Ferrari languished in eighth and tenth – Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen respectively – while China victors Red Bull also had a quiet session with Mark Webber ninth and Sebastian Vettel 12th.
Second practice takes place in a short while.
