An intriguing prospect may be in store when the qualifying for the Bahrain Grand prix gets underway if this session is anything to go by, for there is a tight battle developing at the front.
Fastest car, as it often is on Fridays this year, was the Williams of Nico Rosberg, his time of 1:33.339 eclipsing the Renault of Fernando Alonso by two tenths of a second, while third went to Jarno Trulli who looked quick and assured in the Toyota all session, as did his team mate Timo Glock who finished the session in eighth place.
That Glock registered a time only four tenths slower than Rosberg tells the story, and between him and his team mate come Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber in fourth and fifth for Red Bull, Jenson Button in the quickest Brawn in sixth and Adrian Sutil seventh in the Force India.
Do not write off Sutil's effort as showboating, for the car looked excellent and was consistently among the fastest in the opening sector as clearly improvements have been made by the fitting of a new interim diffuser.
Rounding out the top ten are Rubens Barrichello in the second Brawn and the Williams of Kazuki Nakajima. For the record, the gap between the Japanese and his German team mate measures just over half a second, giving a clear indication of how close this field is.
Best McLaren went to Lewis Hamilton in 11th, best Ferrari to Felipe Massa in 15th, and both BMW’s languish unhappily in the bottom four.
