The second Friday session of any weekend this year has seen cars pounding around the circuits on long run simulations, and this 90 minutes was no exception to the rule. Nevertheless, there were some interesting points to take note of even if the lap times are an unknown quantity, the first being the presence of the two Williams cars at the head of the field.
The FW31 always features strongly on a Friday but has yet to convert the obvious speed it carries into results, and Nico Rosberg was the man in front today, his time of 1:21.588 under two tenths ahead of team mate Kazuki Nakajima when the session came to a close.
In a change from this morning’s running order Fernando Alonso came in third in the Renault, just a few one-hundredths off the Williams pace, with Rubens Barrichello the best of the Brawns today in fourth and the last man under 1:22.
Mark Webber, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel – the two Red Bull runners sandwiching the second Brawn – all lapped in very similar times, while next man Nelson Piquet kept up the relative symmetry with the second Renault.
The remaining top ten runners were Sebastien Buemi – the fastest Ferrari-engined car, an STR – and Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari F60.
Further back and the second Maranello entry finished 15th, Felipe Massa sitting just behind the two McLaren’s of Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen and just ahead of the BMW pair Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld.
There is clearly a sense of confidence at Toyota where Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli finished 18th and 19th, the last runners as Adrian Sutil could not get a lap in in the Force India.
