Alonso on top
Mixed order

The old cliché that qualifying will be a tight battle may well be worth repeating after final practice in Monaco threw up a very interesting order. Of course, qualifying is all important around the tight and twisty circuit, and we can expect to see some aggressive tactics later on today.

To have Fernando Alonso at the head of the field is somewhat odd these days, but there he is in the Renault R29 with a time of 1:15.164, just shading the form favourite Jenson Button in the Brawn by a few hundredths of a second.

Heikki Kovalainen put the McLaren third, proving the car is suited to the slow speed corners here, and Rubens Barrichello slotted the second Brawn into fourth position.

With Felipe Massa fifth and just over one tenth away from the fastest time in the Ferrari, one can see how unpredictable qualifying is promising to be, and Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton come next, a further tenth away.

Half a second off the top time comes Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull, with the top ten order completed by Nico Rosberg’s Williams and the second RB5 of Mark Webber.

The back four reads like a corporate nightmare, with two Toyota’s and two BMW’s filling the spots, while notable performance came from Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella in the Force India cars, finishing the day a creditable 12th and 14th.
