According to several reports, Toyota are considering Fuji's future as a Japanese GP venue. Track owner Toyota is taking a close look at its Formula 1 programme in an effort to slash its costs. The Japanese giant has been hit by the economical crisis and has recently announced its first-ever operating loss.
Several sources, including Japan's Asahi Shimbun newspaper and BMW Sauber F1 team, reported that Toyota will cancel its agreement to host the Japanese GP alternating with Honda-owned Suzuka. The Fuji circuit, located in the foothills of Mount Fuji west of Tokyo, hosted the country's 2007 and 2008 F1 races, and was due to return to the calendar in 2010.
However, a Toyota spokesman denied any speculation to press agencies, stating that while Fuji's future is indeed under consideration, Toyota "...are making plans to host the race next year."
The news comes amid fresh doubts on the future of the Cologne-based outfit, that saw a promising season start vanish in the past couple of races. Nevertheless, Toyota has joined F1 teams association FOTA in lodging a joint entry for the 2010 season.
