Round three of British Formula Three was held this weekend at Rockingham before the event Daniel Riccardo of Carlin Motorsport leads the National Class by eighteen points over JTR’s Nick Tandy while Daniel McKenzie of Fortec leads Gabriel Dias of T-Sport in the National Class.
Race one saw a very well deserved emotional victory for Nick Tandy, just weeks following the death of his brother and team owner Joe Tandy.
He took the lead as the front row took themselves out. Ricciardo tried to outbreak Hitech driver Ranger Van Der Zande and launched himself over the Dutchman’s car and into retirement. Van Der Zande would also retire with damage a few laps later.
Marcus Ericsson finished second on his series return with Double R ahead of teammates Daisuke Nakajima and Carlos Huertas who were third and fourth.
Max Chilton of Carlin was fifth, Rikki Christodoulou of Fortec sixth, Henry Arundel of Carlin seventh, Victor Garcia of Fortec eighth, Wayne Boyd of T-Sport ninth and reigning National Class Champion Jay Bridger for potential new Formula One team Litespeed completes the top ten.
In the National Class McKenzie took the win with eleventh overall, Dias was second with twelfth overall and Maxim Snegirev of West-Tec third in class and fourteenth overall.
Ericsson capped off the perfect return to the series by doing something he never did while doing a full season – win.
He was lucky to inherit the win when the long time race leader Christodoulou was penalised for lining up out of position on the front row of the grid before the start.
Two incidents on the first lap caused the safety car to be deployed. Van Der Zande was again taken out at the first corner, this time by Tandy and later Dias and Huertas had a coming together causing both to retire.
After Christodoulou’s disqualification Arundel was promoted to second with Adriano Buzaid competing the podium driving for T-Sport.
The rest of the top ten were, Nakajima, Ricciardo, Walter Grubmuller of Hitech, Victor Garcia of Fortec, Bridger, Hywel Lloyd of CF and Chilton.
McKenzie won the National Class with Snegirev coming home second. They were the only two National Class competitors to finish the race as rivals Dias and Correa both retired.
In the Championship Ricciardo now has 76 points and still holds his advantage over Tandy who has 61 points. In the National Class McKenzie has moved onto 114 points and is dominating the class with Dias his nearest rival on 72 points.
