A clearer indication of the status quo in Turkey came with this morning’s final free practice session at Istanbul Park, where Felipe Massa set the ultimate pace in the Ferrari with a time of 1: 27.983, the fastest lap we have seen all weekend so far.
Also buoyed by the session will be the Toyota team – back from a disastrous Monaco showing – and the seemingly rejuvenated BMW-Sauber with its new double diffuser. The Cologne cars finished second and third, Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock setting times in a very similar area and just shy of Massa, while Robert Kubica put in a late run to secure a promising fifth position, three tenths off the leading pace.
In fourth was Kazuki Nakajima, the Japanese again showing that he has the speed but struggles to find the consistency, with the Brawn pair of Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button a seemingly confident sixth and seventh.
Nico Rosberg in the second Williams, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel make up the top ten, and the latter may well be disappointed with the pace of the car this weekend, and neither Renault nor McLaren featured in the top ten this morning.
We will be back with full live commentary for qualifying a little later on.
