Expectedly overshadowed by the slow implosion of Formula One itself, the first practice session for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, supposedly the last but surely – at this moment – in negotiation with the FOTA regime, went the way of Red Bull, the RB5 looking less elegant than of late with a revised nose that, as Sebastian Vettel says, resembles a duck’s bill.
It was the young German who took the top slot in the end, having trailed team mate Mark Webber – always on form here – for most of the session; Vettel took the spoils with 1:19.400, with Webber a couple of tenths back in second place.
Coming next were the two Brawn runners, both failing to dip into the 19’s, with Jenson Button leading Rubens Barrichello by a mere fraction, and Fernando Alonso took fifth – a full second behind the fastest runners – ahead of the fastest Ferrari of Felipe Massa.
The top ten runners are completed by Jarno Trulli for Toyota, Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren, Nico Rosberg in the Williams and Giancarlo Fisichella in the Force India.
Second practice takes place in a little while, and we will have a report on that, too.
