There is considerable speculation in F1 circles that points towards the FIA announcing two new teams to join the 2010 entry list. Respected website Grandprix.com is reporting that these may be Dave Richards’ Prodrive entry and possibly the well regarded Epsilon Euskadi outfit from Spain.
Both of these were entries when the book was originally opened a few months ago, but were rejected in favour of Manor, Campos and USF1.
It was widely reported that the rejected teams had been told, at short notice, that to secure an entry they would have to use the Cosworth engine, and it is believed both of the named teams had connections with existing manufacturers.
While it is not known whether one of the new teams is to take over the soon to be defunct Sauber-BMW facility, a takeover bid for which was recently rejected on the grounds that BMW wanted too much money, what is curious is that the inclusion of two new teams would bring the entries to 28 cars.
As the regulations – and the circuits – allow for only 26 runners, this would necessitate two cars failing to qualify at each round, something we cannot see the modern breed of sponsor being particularly happy with.
