Any chance of a comeback by Michael Schumacher in 2009 appears to have been scuppered as Ferrari’s Stefano Domenicali has insisted the seven times champion will not be returning.
"I'm happy he is training,” Domenicali said, “but what I can absolutely rule out is that Michael can return this year as a racing driver."
The news comes after the current stand-in for Felipe Massa, Luca Badoer, had a dreadful outing in Valencia, starting and finishing last. However, Domenicali insists that things would have been tough for Schumacher, too:
"It would have been tough for Michael too, because it's a difficult track and it's new. Obviously his approach is always aggressive. Would he have done well? I really think so, because he wouldn't have gone for it if he wasn't confident. As for how well, I'd be dishonest: I don't know. However, he would certainly have done well."
Ferrari is considering its options while keeping Badoer in the car for the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix, with increasing speculation pointing to veteran Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, currently racing for Force India, as favourite to take over the drive.
